Students study a range of engaging and challenging topics in Years 7 and 8 which reflect the new national curriculum for MFL. Much emphasis is placed on high levels of literacy in Spanish; mastery of grammar is stressed as a key skill and students are encouraged to ‘decode’ language from a range of contexts.  Assessment takes place each half term, with students being tested on the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) on a gradual basis.

Topics in Year 7:

  • Self, family and friends
  • Free time and my opinion
  • My town and local area
  • School
  • Pocket money

Topics in Year 8:

  • Health
  • Fashion
  • Food and drink
  • Technology
  • Relationships
  • Holidays

Students have the opportunity to study a cortometraje (short film) as part of the BFI’s Screening Languages project (in association with the LSEF), of which the department is a pioneering member. Students also have the opportunity to go on a 4 day cultural and linguistic trip to Malaga in Year 8.
